A couple of days recently I took a trial to Sreamlined, a plugin to generate associated relationship between existing models in Rails. I think Rails folks will interest to this strange project and be curious to think how fancy it can be. In my case, it got me totally hooked: since streamlined, I can directly get content and relationship of models by looking up database tables in streamlined view. Streamlined offers many corresponding methods in generating class to help you pick up which columns in relative tables you want to keep attention with. Add, select, modify, or delect data with such columns are certainly supplied.

Their work give me a big help, thank you. But at the beginning, I say ‘generate associated relationship’, that means assuming I can get an overview of logic between my existing models after sweeping over my rails app, namely it can automatically detect all over logic of my project. Then bring me a rational chart or tree in view, or even I can directly modify my app’s logic in this tree. Yet streamlined doesn’t support my imagine.

Anyway, this out of alpha release is only 0.0.2. Expect they can add up more fancy to it.

Keep in mind that Streamlined is for existing models, if your tables or models doesn’t exist, it will generate an error:

error Before updating scaffolding from new DB schema, try creating a table for your model ()

Over two days streamlined caught my attention. I tried it, got nothing but instead a lot of achings. That made various sorts of problems corrupting Rails. I’ll continue to be up with it and hope they can fix their bug lately in future. After all now my rest of Rails apps run well.

I don’t scare of connecting problem since I think I really got it worked out on me. But My Rails ultimately teased to me:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

It can’t find out mysqld.sock though it perfectly run on early morning before I set up streamlined. So I edit /etc/my.cnf and change ‘socket’ location in section to fix through this, but nothing happened. So I roughly

sudo ln -s  /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock /tmp/mysql.sock

mysqld.sock in /var/run/mysqld/ shares 755 mood. Then everything is ok! What a silent world.

That’s all~

Yesterday I tended to install mod_fcgid on my apache2, instead of mod_fastcgi or mod_ruby because of some insecure pipe problem with the laters. And To be pride and surprised, the author of mod_fcgid is Chinese people, but that doesn’t help me to come over the problems I face, so I need to handle them on my own. I’d like to review what I encountered and am hoping to help other people who are humbled by this.

My machine deploy: Ubuntu dapper, apache 2.0.58, Ruby 1.8.4, Rails 1.1.4, (mod_fcgid 1.10, libtool, ruby1.8-dev)

1.    Installing mod_fcgid

Here is the problems ever, if you don’t want to read this, you can read the next paragraph which is correct steps.

Download mod_fcgid 1.10 and follow the INSTALL.txt step by step. There I ever had two problems. I folllowed by INSTALL.txt and it returned error no matter what I did. So I think I need to reinstall apache2 statically to load mod_fcgid module. Follow INSTALL.txt and Line:

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-dav --enable-so
--enable--maintainer-mod --enable-shared=max --enable-module=most --enable-fcgid

then when adding

LoadModule fcgid_module modules/mod_fcgid.so

to my httpd.conf and restart my apache2, I got error,

Syntax error on line 233 of /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf:
module fcgid_module is built-in and can't be loaded

Note ‘–enable-fcgid’. That’s because I have already installed mod_fcgid statically, I can’t use LoadModule to load a static build-in module, get it? Because it is already statically installed in apache2, and LoadModule is used to load a dynamic module. That is the reason why it returned error. So I had to reinstalled apache2 by this below to dynamically load modules at latter day.

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable-dav --enable-so
--enable--maintainer-mod --enable-shared=max --enable-module=most

Okay! Then needed to install mod_fcgid dynamically. Follow the INSTALL.txt file, I got an error again:

dlname not found in apache2/modules/mod_fcgid.la.

Yes, apache2 failed to build the mod_fcgid.so and it was not in apache2/modules directory. That problem is because of the version of libtool in apache2/build. After I update my libtool by

sudo apt-get install libtool

I still had same error. Oh I forgot although I installed libtool, but I needed to do this

sudo cp /usr/bin/libtool /usr/local/apache2/build

to override previous libtool in apache2.

Ok, this time we can reinstall mod_fcgid again by steps in INSTALL.txt and it can be correctly installed.

2. Using gem to install fcgi

Next we need to install fcgi by type:

sudo gem install fcgi

But the annoying error appeared again. Said:

ERROR: While executing gem ... (RuntimeError)
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.
Gem files will remain installed in
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/libxml-ruby-0.3.6 for inspection.
ruby extconf.rb install libxml-ruby

That indicated me to install ‘ruby-devel’ package, named ruby1.8-dev, so type:

sudo apt-get install ruby1.8-dev
sudo gem install fcgi

Well, problem was resolved, again.

3. Setting up Rails app, such as typo

Set up your Rails app by refering this page, and add this code below in your httpd.conf (warsaw is localhost name)

LoadModule fcgid_module     modules/mod_fcgid.so

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin webmaster@dummy-host.example.com
    DocumentRoot /home/alex/httpd

<Directory "/home/alex/httpd/typo/public">
        Options All ExecCGI
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi
        RewriteBase /blog
    </Directory>

<Directory "/home/alex/httpd/radiant/public">
        Options All ExecCGI
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        AddHandler fcgid-script .fcgi
        RewriteBase /radiant
    </Directory>

<Location /blog>
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
        RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]
    </Location>

<Location /radiant>
        RewriteEngine On
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
        RewriteRule ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]
    </Location>
</VirtualHost>

I ever mentioned John W. Long‘s Radiant, a simplified and elegant CMS on my previous post before a few month. Now I really have to give him a thumb-up. John fulfilled and whip up his outstanding project into Version 0.5. Radiant is a really simple, chic, and usable Rails CMS app. As its author said, it is for small team member communicating their data and thoughts, but rather than a blog engine. I think his bang-up job is a practical way for novices to learn Rails app and the app’s core worthy to attend is Radius, a tag-based template which pouring all the magic into this alittle CMS.

One hour before, I installed Radiant, which is really neat and beautiful gadget. The premise before you dancing with her is make sure that you have installed ruby, rails, ri, irb. Of course.

When setting up Radiant, if you have 404 error, type:

sudo chmod -R 755 radiant

If your brower says it can’t find table ‘config’ in production database in mysql, type:

script/setup_database development

and

script/server development

That is a bit different with its README document, because you are now in developer mood. I am not sure whether needing to add

host: localhost

in respective section in ‘database.yml’.

Now give it a glimpse.

Update: I successfully set up FastCGI on my apache2 before a couple of days, and I got a error of some thing like

Errno::EACCES: Permission denied -

in radiant/cache folder during running radiant on apache2 at frist time. Then chmod -R 777 cache in the root folder, and all that will be smoothly coast into right place.

A little too occupied for me to maintain two blogs at the same time. Yesterday my other personal blog, Upstairs, Downstairs debuted. I tend to write some kind of my inner thoughts at that intimate nest. If so, I might have no plenty times to update this blog. Learning takes times, thinking takes times, writing takes times as well. Posting one entry that contains 200 literals is more likely to cost me 10 minute, needless to say the constant suffering under web proxy during transport. But combination of two blog sharing two radically different themes is even more ridiculous, and I don't like to mash them up.

Anyway, wasting time equals guilty. Harsh circumstance.

Am I getting a frigging nuts? I am terriblely nervous.

Half year previously I received my first Newsvine invite from a passionate foreign folk when I drop in his site( found in ma.ganolia)
. But after a short pleasant surprise, I constantly had felt Newsvine sucks to be itself. They boosted that they will be a new overwhelming digg or slashdot by the user-contributed-info features. I didn’t perceive any real validity for me. Because I note most of news are posted by people who hired in A.P. or other big press and few people contributes news themself. I can get wrapped in ‘NewYork Times’ and ‘Business Week’ , etc. Newsvine versus NewYork Times. I can’t feature them by content really. Why do I still choose to dive into Newsvine’s sphere.

But just now I change my opinion a bit. What a intriguing interface, damn!

I don’t know when Newsvine somehow creeps in this fancy. It’s nearly being like a awesome CMS.

Watch out the right corner beside the portrait. That point out your ‘Vineacity’ of current state. Hopefully I can flesh out some branches on my obsolete trunk, if I am not in pretty occupy:wink:.

Was a sensitive man living in a harsh realistic world, I am always hung on some situation that like how can I tweak my things to be satisfied by myself, and, to be a man owning a pessimistic inner, when past days and trustworthy people looked even further and further, I just despointed again and again. Some times I want to grasp any inspiration around and jot down my feelings, I will finger out that how can I discribe all of it to be better off, or some times I ridiculously conceived the article’s themes, phrase, and bear bones, or which next sentense should I say. Seriously more than a columnist.

But blogging SHOULD NOT be that. Get rid of all the fuckups that we all worry about, man. JUST SCRIBBLE. Follow your mind, flow with it, drift away. Blog is not technique manual. I write this blog only for two reason—-self improving and, the one I have to admit that perhaps my employer wil ask if I have a technique blog when I ask a job. My answer is I have a english blog, and maybe my bonehead boss tell me you don’t fit into the job. Because he consider this dude has ambitions.

So, blog can bring me nothing. Blogging is natural, is sensual, is humanity, just like sex. you don’t ponder why people make it. Aside: for mate. Oh Yeah, excellent! Ya know you’re cheating. You will not think that why people make love, or which of the next postures as they do.

And I ‘d like to emphasize that we couldn’t expect each our post is a stunning and fascinating job, as well as that lovely folks who make that thing couldn’t get satisfied each times;)

Any Opinion?

I handled it, and I am hoping my experience could be helping you. My machine deployment: MySQL5.1.6a, ruby1.8.4, rails1.1.2.

Update: type to make true you can correctly connect database by using username and password

mysql depot_development <db/create.sql -p

, If return error, continue to read.

Several minutes earlier I tumbled at my first Rails problem, when Rails was trying to connect MySQL database, it sucks. The shell prompt appears an error:

#28000Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

That means the Rails application can not connect my MySQL correctly, but why? Firstly I checked my configure file in config/database.yml, as the following:

development:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_development
  username:              #Note this
  password:
  host: localhost

test:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_test
  username:              #Note this
  password:
  host: localhost

production:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_production
  username: prod
  password: wibble
  host: localhost

I think my config file was right, and googled this error on web. It seems that the same problem is bothering mamy people who rock with Ruby on Rails. After skim over several sites I can search, all of them still can’t help me out to handle the mess. Some one suggest that it might be your MySQL setup version needed to upgrade, and others assist to type

ruby script/server environment=development

. I did it, but received same error.

Ermmmmmm, a little frustration…..eh? but back to the book Agile Web Development with Rails(1st edition), and preusing at page 52. I think the author describes this problem explicitly, yet many Rails forks who have same error didn’t get his point perfectly well. After creating a database in MySQL, you may assign such corresponding grant to users. Like:

mysql> create database depot_development;
mysql> create database depot_test;
mysql> create database depot_production;
mysql> grant all on depot_development.* to 'dave'@'localhost';
mysql> grant all on depot_test.* to 'dave'@'localhost';
mysql> grant all on depot_production.* to 'prod'@'localhost' identified by 'wibble';
mysql> exit

In config/database.yml, if you want any developer can access your database by conviention, you will left the username field blank, and find sth like this:

development:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_development
  username:              #blank
  password:
  host: localhost

test:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_test
  username:              #blank
  password:
  host: localhost

production:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_production
  username: prod
  password: wibble
  host: localhost

and that will cause error. Because when Rails connecting MySQL, it find the user name and password in conf/database.yml, if you left blank in username and password field, Rails will use root authority to connect database, but it can’t find what is the root password, then prompt error. That’s why it sucks rather than what MySQL version is, and you get:

#28000Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

You must specify the correct username and password that should be the same ones when creating relevant database. Such as:

development:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_development
  username: dave	#dave has no password in his database
  password:
  host: localhost

test:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_test
  username: dave	#dave has no password in his database
  password:
  host: localhost

production:
  adapter: mysql
  database: depot_production
  username: prod	#prod has password in his database
  password: wibble	#which is 'wibble'
  host: localhost

Refresh your browser, and you see…..? Cheers.

Important Update:

I strongly recommend that same individual must hold the same username and corresponding password in your different app’s config/database.yml for true, no matter which of databases in mysql you used in various app by the same user.

For instance, I am alex and I really am ^^). I have two Rails app, depot and radiant(a simple CMS, I take a trial just now). If both depot and radiant use ‘alex’ as a mysql connect username, I must specify same user name and same password in the two database.yml, otherwise one of these app will get confused and restrained as connecting mysql, even the two app will implement their respective databases, because they all use ‘alex’ to connect mysql. So ‘alex’ needs same database password in different Rails app.

If you installed Rails before installed MySql, Rails database driver cannot find your database. You should reinstall Rails or other choice, add MySql socket location to respective section in ‘database.yml’, such as

socket: /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

Or, prompt saying:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

to solve this sort of error, check it out my recent post on it.

If your problem to be worked out after reading my post or still have any connecting problem, I wish you can leave your comment here. Lemme know and welcome .
